Hi, Phil;

I am a housemate of Jack & Sharon of the JACSAN Pilot Car. I'm Ivy, of Ivy''s pilot car, and am a Ham also - KB9QPM. and all 3 of us are members of MARS. (Jack said he didn't think to mention that when he wrote to you.) They have been escorting for a couple of years, I started last year, and enjoy it immensely! I have a 2M/440 rig in the car, but do not use it when escorting unless there's an emergency and our cells are out of range.. I hope to add HF and a screwdriver antenna at some time in the future.
73 & drive like your life depends on it - because it does!

Hi Ivy, welcome. That is great that you are a ham. What rig are you using in your mobile?And have you chosen your HF rig yet? I know if had a choice I don't know what I would chose.
Icom, Kenwood & Yeasu make great rigs. Good luck on you choice. Also who's screwdriver are you looking at?

Hi, Phil;

The current mobile is an IC-2100. The HF I want to put in is my old "backup" IC-725. My "good" HF rig is a TS-450 which is used at home, (or will be when I get an antenna up - we just moved, and hanging a skyhook is pretty low on the list.) All radios are opened up for MARS. I plan to build a G5RV, (or G5-Variable resistor as some call them), and will have to "fold" it due to the size of our back yard. As far as a mobile HF, I have an El Cheapo screwdriver that I've had for years and never gotten around to mounting and; using it. (It's so cheap you have to buy a plastic tube to protect it from the elements!) I have even forgotten where I found it, but a Google search might find it.
MARS: I'm NNN0HQD in Navy MARS, and Jack and; Sharon are NNN0ADO and NNN0AEK respectively. I am also a member of SHARES, though don't know if I will be able to continue there now that we're in TX. In the past I've been heavy into emergency traffic, and was GCE-2 when we lived in Wisconsin, but now that I'm piloting, I could be about anywhere when something happens. On the other hand, traveling around could put me in the "right place" to provide Ecom in an emergency.
Enough for now, have a great one! 73

NNN0HQD THIS IS AAR4CW.... Any I got into mars last year and have been NCS a 1101Z net on KCG. Last Sunday was my last time being the ncs for that weekely net. I had to give it up. My wife and I are moving to the Portland, Oregon area. I'm not sure where we will land, North of th river or south of the river. My wife has a son in Vancouver and her dad lives in Oregon City. So both side will do.

My FT 857 is connected to a atas120 and it works 40 to 440.
The dx70 is connected to a antenna tuner and then to a switched to a mini Bug Catcher or a group of hustlers 80, 75, &60 meters.
the rest is into normal antennas for their bands. I want to pick up a HiQ screwdriver for both the dx 70 and the ft857. The HiQ is 160 meters through 10 I think, But the advantage is that it doesn't get any taller. all the changes are inside.
I think it needs a 72" whip.

My plan is to have what I need Radio wise with me and then If needed I can go anywhere..

speaking of antenna's higain has a cheep 80 to 10 meter $99.95. You have to end tune it. But I think that you could was find a place to tune it then use an antenna tuner to fine tune it...the antenna is a short vertical...

HI guys I started at forum on QRZ for any of us in the pilot car business and truckers.
Please place you hat in the ring. I'm going to get a couple of ham's that are drivers to join. Making a living on the road is hard and having a friend or two out there with us helps.. Besides you never know how you will find on the HF bands or even 2 meters...

Hi phil I just joined this pilotcar thing and wanted to say hi, I am also a ham operator normally running 2m or 70cm ... most of the time just 2m when I'm on the road since my mobile is just a 2m rig, but I do have a dual band HT I sometimes take with me, If i can remember to grab it on the way out the door. My call is WB9LAF I am located in northeastern Indiana.
